Objective of UPoN 2008
Since its first edition held in 1996 in Szeged, the aim of the UPoN conference is to provide a forum for researchers working on noise and fluctuations, where they can present and discuss their scientific problems which do resist solutions. These unsolved problems need a more thorough, more open-minded, and less biased refereeing process than the presentation of solved problems typical in the publications of the standard literature. The conference tradition dictates that to be accepted each proposal (invited, contributed oral and poster papers) has to be reviewed using double-blind refereeing process by appropriate members of the Scientific Committee. To favor cross-fertilization from different disciplines and knowledge transfer no parallel sessions were scheduled.

Main Topics
1. Applications of noise in measurements, technologies and informatics
2. Biological noise
3. Crackling noise
4. Noise in complex and non-linear systems
5. Noise in materials and devices
6. Quantum noise and coherence
7. Theoretical trends in fluctuations

Invited Speakers and committee members are listed in the people tab
Organization
The conference was held in the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon), in France, on June 2 to 6, 2008. The Organizing Committee is composed of members of the Laboratoire de Physique from the ENS Lyon and from INSA Lyon, with Sergio Ciliberto as the conference chair. Other members of the Organizing Committee are Ludovic Bellon, Éric Bertin, Thierry Dauxois, Stéphanie Deschanel, Stéphane Roux and Loïc Vanel.
The Scientific Committee is formed by respected members of the Noise and Fluctuation community and is updated at any Conference in conjunction with its announcement. The duty of the Scientific Committee is to propose contributions focusing subjects under controversy and/or still open to solution (up to 3 titles and speakers for each member), and to act as referee. Contributed papers (extended abstracts up to 2 pages) were called by the Conference and undergone a double-blind refereeing process to promote invited, and acceptance as oral or poster.
